THE PUMPHOUSE

YOUR CURATED ESCAPE STARTS HERE.

Discover the wilderness.

An iconic location. Adults only. It’s time for relaxation.

The Pumphouse is an iconic, World Heritage listed building located in inland Tasmania. The building stands majestically in St Clair, the deepest lake of Tasmania, surrounded by breath-taking wilderness.

Originally a 1940s Pumphouse, an industrial relic which has been carefully and beautifully revived into a unique boutique accommodation.

The hotel has two unique buildings: the Shorehouse and the famous Pumphouse, with views onto St Clair lake, cradle mountain and the forest creates an immediate sense of peace.

An adult only policy makes for beautiful tranquillity: a space to get comfortably lost in. Let’s get lost in tranquility, go slow, with our slow stays suggestions.

The Pumphouse is now revived into a majestic, mystical experience. Two art deco inspired buildings command the landscape: the Pumphouse standing centre stage in the stillness of the lake & the Shorehouse keeping steady on the shore.

Why I love it!

What’s not to love about the Pumphouse? Let me give you my highlights and let you create your own.

My husband Mikey Enright & I stayed in the Retreat rather than the Pumphouse; the retreat is the latest addition to the 1940s Pumphouse. The luxurious Retreat was designed by award-winning Tasmanian architecture firm JAWS Architects, Every room you walk in has cleverly had a window or other design to make you feel out in the stunning scenery surrounding the retreat. However, you are friendly and warm and cosy.

The Pumphouse is a place to come together, not hide in your rooms, which is not like many places where no one mingles. Here we got to know some fabulous people.

A little tip, there is a magical spa here; book in advance as it fills up quickly; I’d certainly recommend indulging in the spa facilities to rest your exploring-tired muscles.

Facilities here are perfect for the wilderness, with fireplaces, a collection of traditional board games and little reading nooks scattered throughout. Outside you have rowing boats for the water and bikes for the earth. You’re an explorer now, discovering this incredible land for yourself. But remember, there’s always space for a massage when you return! I’d recommend indulging in the spa facilities to rest your exploring-tired muscles.

WHERE I STAYED

THE RETREAT

The difference in staying in the retreat is that all the drinks, and food, are included. Unlike the other rooms where you pay at the end as it’s an honesty system, the retreat is free and replenished daily! Along with any other drinks onsite. They have sourced superb wine and food, all locally produced. My husband, who is particular about food and beverage, being from this industry, was incredibly impressed.

The Retreat has an outdoor bath; it has to be on the list of the best outdoor baths in Australia. The main room has a mix of textiles to cosy up in and sit and look out at the impressive lake I loved that every part of the retreat was exclusive to us. We read, relaxed went out for walks and explored. I can’t wait to go back to this luxurious private retreat. It has without a doubt one of the most stylish looks and feel to it, where you can’t help feeling relaxed and snug in The Retreat.

Conscious luxury.

The space has 18 rooms to choose from, across the Pumphouse and The Shorehouse, with the dramatic wilderness surrounding you. With no WiFi, it’s time to disconnect consciously. This is something I loved: a space for recharging, stepping out of my comfort zone and a deliberate retreat.

The Pumphouse commands the end of the pier, emerging from the middle of Lake St Clair. It’s so calming and commands your eye. Sit back. Relax. Sip your drink. Surrounded by the still water, your pace of life slows right down.

Conscious luxury: the purpose of the Pumphouse.

The Rooms.

Stylish, elegant and designed beautifully with the kind of attention to detail that makes you want to stay forever. With magnificent views from every room you choose to stay in, the rooms deliciously trap you. Whoever you love to travel with, there is a space for you: couples, a solo trip or with friends; the Pumphouse has that unique quality of accommodating all.

The location is unique, and Pumphouse’s approach to businesses is refreshingly unique. Honesty bars to help yourself too, sitting with others for breakfast and dinner, solitary rows on the lake, and a walk in the wilderness create a sense of calm restoration.

Booking is essential and is different from anywhere else. With set check-in days and minimum night stays, the Pumphouse is more of an experience than simply a place to stay.
